Social D

On Shim's suggestion, I did the trainer thing with Social D's Live at the Roxy. Good choice. It was a good mix of pretty high cadence music. I will now be needing other suggestions for good training music. The Jason Mraz and John Mayer just wasn't working for some reason.

Anyone? What do you like to workout to? I'm new to this whole "Music not played on A.M. radio" thing.

what is this 'radio' thing you speak of? I heard it was dead.

Well duh, video killed the radio star. Hey, I'm an 80s kid, what do you expect?

Do you have any Jason and the Scorchers? Somtimes I put my iPod on shuffle and just skip the songs that don't fit the mood.

What do I expect? I expect you to rise above that Munson. Don't be the victim of circumstance. I remember when crap killed the rock and roll star. I turned the radio off in about 1985. Although, Bowie has always been a favorite of mine, the success of "Let's Dance" influenced and helped ruin popular music for the next 5 years or so. I turned the radio back on when I heard "Smells like teen spirit" somewhere. That was the first popular song I had heard in years that didn't suck. They wanted to call it grunge, but it was just simple rock.

And oh yeah, confession: I liked The Thompson Twins.

I should probably lie about that, but oh well, there it is.

I also like old Husker Du and Copper Blue by Sugar (Bob Molds follow up project).

I don't have any Jason and the Scorchers or Husker Du, but I have Copper blue. I also have some clash. I should be able to get by with that for a while. Also, do you remember a local group called Buck Naked and the Bare Bottom Boys? P.K.A. Bump Fuzz?
I have their one and only CD. Buck was shot in daylight in San Francisco, where the band lived at the time. They called their music "porno-billy". Very sick and wrong, but entertaining.

I remember seeing them at the Lift Ticket in old town Benson, I had gone to see Charlie Burton and the Hiccups, but Charlie was sick so Buck Naked stepped in, they were wearing g-strings with plungers on the front. A friend of mine who I met in NYC when I was out east (who was originally from Omaha)Craig Anton use to be in the band, funny thing I saw him last night on a rerun of Everybody Loves Raymond, he was the father of some little brat that Raymond has issues with, I havent spoken to him in a while, but I see him on sitcoms every so often. Anyway if you burn me a copy of the Buck Naked CD, I can get you a copy of the Jason CD. Deal?

Regarding your comment about Grunge, I like this comment I lifted from an interview with Bob Mould

I'm not really up on what people are into, I don't follow the press. I can safely say that suburban white-guy guitar grunge rock has been tired since people called it that. And if that's what people are reacting against, then I'm all for it, because it's really not that interesting.
My take on the music business in general: I think there's a real problem happening right now and it's the fact that the whole business has boiled down to a handful of large, multi-national corporations that are struggling to get teen-agers to part with their money in their direction.
There's way too much bad music out there these days. I think people are getting sick of buying music that doesn't mean anything to them. Unfortunately, popular music is being reduced to a backdrop or as an accessory when you're buying clothes at the Gap. It's like a handbag or fingernail polish; music has been reduced to something that's meaningless. It's a real shame, but maybe it needs to be destroyed so those of us who take it seriously can find another way to go about our business. Because the music business as it exists right now is a pretty unattractive proposition.

Jason for Buck. Deal.

I saw Buck Naked at the Lift Ticket. Well, at least part of the show. I got real drunk and had to leave early that night.

American Idol is the most complete incarnation of what he's talking about. I am guilty of what he's saying to some degree. I try to separate my taste in music from public opinion or self-image, but I catch myself disliking music only because I'm supposed to. Prince would be a perfect example. I hate Prince, but only because I'm supposed to.

Let's go crazy!

I hate Prince, always have always will. It has nothing to do with anything other than the fact that I think his music is really boring and is mostly glossed over funk, if I want to listen to funk I'll listen to Sly and the Family Stone. I put Prince in the same category as Micheal Jackson, and while I liked some of the Jack Fives early Mowtown stuff I have never liked anything he did as a solo artist, ever.

Yeah, me too. But don't forget "Thriller". The greatest Rock and Roll album of all time.

By the way, Bicycle Race is also good to train to. You won't forget it now. There are a few other good ones on the best of Queen
