Here the PC I'm building up for my woman. Processor: AMD Duo Core 2.8Mhz / About the same as Mac System bus: 1000Mhz / Mac: 800Mhz - too slow! Memory: 2gig with room for 4 gig / Mac: Same Graphics: 512mb GeForce / Mac: 128mb standard, 256mb extra fancy, but still not as good.
Cost: $600 / Mac: 2 times, maybe 3 times as much???
Now I won't get to load the fancy Tiger software or whatever it is, but Michelle's going to be one happy gamer when all is said and done.
don't forget to add virus protection, spam protection and spyware protection onto the PC.
and also drivers, whatever the hell those are. And since you're building it, of course it's cheaper. Retail costs put them about the same, with the advantage to the Mac. You know, for not being shitty?
In all my years of PC experience the only PCs I've seen that had viruses or spyware belonged to people who were quite un-technically savvy. Like the guy from my Help Desk video. "I didn't want to go any further, because I was afraid I'd lose all my text..."
They should have gotten a Mac. Then they would have had a very pretty, very expensive paper weight.
Sorry, it's just so easy to rail on Macs.
I'm just messin' dude. I know Macs are great for getting serious stuff done. It's just different from PC, that's all. But the expense is what prohibits me from ever going there. It's like the carbon bike deal. Sure it's pretty and maybe a little better, but my aluminum bike does just fine and costs way less. And replacing the frame is also cheap and easy, unlike carbon.
The PC I'm building up will contain the hard drive with operating system, case, and optical drives she's currently using. This would never work on a Mac. I like scalability and replaceability. And Cheap. That's PC.
Actually Mike. EVERY PC you've seen had not only a virus, but also some of the most sophisticated spyware ever developed. All in one neat little GUI.
If you are doing this so "your woman" can play games, why not just get an Xbox? They're cheaper and the games are better.
But I don't think this has anything to do with money or performance. You just like to build shit and see if you can get it to work. Honestly, Who mixes campy and shimano?
Apple just isn't ghetto enough for you. Tell you what. When I get home, I'll mount the iPod to the side of the mac with some duct tape.
Oh, and I'd be suspicious of an AMD Duo Core (Intel makes those).
Bryan - Mac uses drivers too. I think thems the things that make the macs not "Freeze" anymore (actually it was a firmware update, but anyway).
Brady - I know you didn't comment, but screw you too
fred -- I know what drivers are, I was just bringing it up because every time you have to plug something into a PC it demands to have more drivers.
mike -- You are correct in one thing: PCs are the standard-bearers of cheap. I'll gladly pay the extra few hundred to not have to worry about the crap PCs dredge up. And I'm guessing Fred only paid 1,299 for his iMac. 1499 at the most.
Ok Fred, ya got me. I should not have gone into battle with someone who could probably rattle off DOS in binary. I know some stuff, but nowhere near what you know. I guess what I meant to say was, "The only PC's I've seen that can no longer function because of destructive viruses or spyware, have been received through the users own foolish operation." Any better, or am I still off?
And yes, duct tape would make a Mac better in my own humble opinion.
Bryan, only $1300 or $1500?!?!? Your fancy carbon bike cost you how much?? And it will become obsolete when??
$1199 - $100 (student discount) + $30 for a second gig of Ram. = $1129 for a damn sweet desktop. To help prove Mike's point though, Apple wanted $150 for the extra ram. I got it at Best Buy for $30. I'll be able to get at least $200 (even though the motherboard is toast) for the old one. If you like to do any Photoshop or 3D rendering or media stuff in general, the Mac rules. Otherwise they're pretty comparable. The PC is a perfectly capable email reader/teh internets surfer.
Mike, you give me too much credit. I don't know DOS in binary. I do have it memorized in "c" though. Here's the main function from the Microsoft source vault:
int main() { while(user_doesnt_press(ctrl_alt_delete)) { Paint_screen(blue); } shutdown(); }

Sorry, but I didn't check your blog until you said you'd be back on Dec. 20th.
Anyway, your Mac is not only manic depressive, but is a homo as well.
There, I feel better. See you in a couple days.
