I saw mod riding home from work today
I was riding home from work. Mod was riding home from work.
I have a question. Did helmets go out of style recently? Several times yesterday, I saw people riding on the trail without helmets. Not just recreational cyclists either. Some serious looking leg-shorn lycra guys out there. I started wearing a helmet about 25 years ago because people (other cyclists) started applying pressure. Back then, a 14 oz helmet was supposed to be ultra light. So yeah, lots of neck strain. I've never really liked wearing one, even now that they're so light, the only way you can tell you have one on is by all the sweat pouring into your eyes. But I wear one because it's generally perceived as the right thing to do. I have never worn a helmet for safety.
If this helmet fad has passed - let me know.
Thanks.

the helmet fad has passed for people who think they're above crashing, or that there's no way the dumbass in front of them could possibly swerve into their path. Or that the lady in the SUV talking on the phone might not be paying attention.
I trust nobody, including myself.
I have crashed many times. I haven't yet landed on my head. I think that's because helmets float on the air gently setting the rider down onto the nice soft pavement.
I don't even know if I'd feel comfortable without a helmet anymore. Kind of like getting used to seat belts.
Mostly I think you have to wear a helmet so there's no chance of becoming an example.
In the eighties, though - oh boy. The only cell phone around rivaled a block of Velveeta in shape, size and flavor. There were no SUV's either. Well, there were, but they were strictly used for suburban utility vehicle-ing.
Dumb-asses were still dumb-asses. But they had the courtesy to throw a friendly warning beer bottle at you before swerving into your path.
The helmets were expensive and heavy. The first one I bought, The Bell "Spine compressor" cost $80 bucks. It was not comfortable.
wow, that's an awesome look into the past ... when I was about eight. Tell me about the Paul Simon concert next, please.
In my one crash, I smacked my head enough to retire my helmet. It really would have hurt sans helmet.
Yeah - Paul Simon. Well I never saw him, but I did see
Kiss
Molly Hatchet
Van Halen
Styx "Too much time on my hands, t-t-t-ticking away!"
Journey
Rush
.38 Special
Black Sabbath "There goes Tokyo"
The Kinks
The J Giles Band
Foreigner
AC/DC (post Bon Scott)
REO Speedwagon
um ... Asia
Head East and maybe Cheap Trick at the saddle creek bar (different times) I think Steppenwolf played there too, but I don't think I went to that.
most of these I can only remember because of the cool 3/4 sleeve concert T-shirts I wore all the time.
And at this thing called "Iowa Jam" in Des Moines ...
Loverboy
Quarterflash
and 3 other I don't recall.
Dude, I was at most of the shows, but you must of missed the big Foghat Show. I also got to see REM in a Bar in Chicago and a very young REplacements, Televison, Jason and the Scorchers, Smashing Pumpkins, Red Hot Chile Peppers, The Beat Farmers,10,000 Maniacs in that same bar, Camper Van Bethoven, I had tickets for Husker Du (but they called in sick, too much smack I guess), and Charlie Burton so many times I lost count.
I did miss Foghat. I saw the Red Hot Chili peppers at peony park, but I'm pretty sure that was after High School. Charlie Burton was great. And speaking of local bands, 'Hit and run' opened for a majority of the shows mentioned above. I can't remember what show it was, (because I wasn't there)but I heard they got booed off the stage because everyone was so sick of them.
who was the guy who used to do reviews of all the concerts for the world herald. Roger somebody? he was a cool guy but I remember one of the musicians (might have been David Lee Roth) said "You got this reviewer - looks like a Narc."
Roger (if that was his name) somebody had a good time with that.
Stay away from the sticky wick.
What - no Bryan Adams?
it was the summer of 69!
Yeah, my buddy worked at the Wierd Herald at the same time as Roger Catlin. We went over to Rogers house cuz he had a copy of the new Charlie Burton Album that hadn't been released yet, we asked him to put it on, but he wouldn't cuz he was watching the grammy's, so he let us borrow it and we never gave it back. I think he's still pissed and this is probably the reason he moved to Boston.
PS. I need some more volunteers for the Papio Crit on July 12th, how about you and Brady? You kind of owe me after posting such a cool memory on your blog.
Excuse me, Fred
Shim: I owe you an amends. While I'll never be the fucking poet laureate, I have learned to raise my standards and will refrain from posting retarded crap like that in the future.
So anyway, what are the details on Papio Crit volunteering?
